California applies EPR rules to textiles.

The first step on a long road.

California has chaptered the SB 707 Responsible Textile Recovery Act of 2024 on the 28^th September 2024.

This Act will apply the principles of the Extended Producer Responsibility to a range of apparel and other textile producers. Those economic actors will be required to establish a producer responsibility organization (PRO) and thus ensure that textiles are not disposed of in the unsorted household waste stream any longer. The PRO is supposed to define a plan for the collection, the repairing and the recycling of textiles.

This program is expected by the ^st July 2028 with the PRO having to submit a first plan by the 1^st July 2030.

The road is still long, but a first step is made.

Spain will follow on the 1st January 2025. The author evaluates the current status of a mandatory application of sorting instructions on consumer packaging in Portugal.
